Treaties and Final Agreements

PhotoThe Province, working with individual First Nations and the federal government, is focussed on building opportunities that will provide a better future for all British Columbians. Treaties play a critical role by helping First Nations achieve independence, stable governance structures, social justice, and economic self-reliance.

Treaties Treaty Information

The Ministry of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation negotiates treaties to materially improve the lives of Aboriginal people, and create economic certainty over Crown land and resources. In addition, treaties and other agreements stimulate investment, create jobs, and spur economic development in Aboriginal communities throughout British Columbia.

Final Agreements

A Final Agreement is stage five of the six-stage B.C. Treaty Commission process. At this stage, the First Nation, the federal and provincial governments negotiate technical and legal issues in the Agreement-in-Principle to produce a Final Agreement. Once ratified, or agreed to by a majority of First Nation community members, the B.C. Legislature, and the Parliament of Canada, a Final Agreement becomes a legislated and legally binding treaty.

Treaty Implementation

The Ministry of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation works with Aboriginal leaders, organizations, individual First Nations, government agencies, industry, local government, and the public to build support for negotiated treaties. Once treaties and other agreements are achieved, the Ministry coordinates how the agreement will be implemented across government.
