The Metis Nation Relationship Accord
At the November 2005 First Ministers' Meeting on Aboriginal Issues in Kelowna, First Ministers committed to strengthening relationships with Aboriginal people based on the principles of mutual respect, reconciliation, and recognition of Aboriginal rights and title. In response, the Métis Nation British Columbia agreed to work with the Province to achieve results on a number of fronts, including strengthening relationships, and building education, housing, health and economic opportunities.
In May 2006, the Province and the Métis Nation British Columbia signed the Métis Nation Relationship Accord. A formalization of the vital relationship between the Province and the Métis people of British Columbia, the Métis Nation Relationship Accord identifies mutual goals, including collaborative efforts to close the gap in quality of life between Métis citizens and other British Columbians.
